I am so tired of my depression, I am taking matters into my hands! Nope, not taking those creepy meds.
I believe I can be completely recovered by doing the following:
1. Going to bed on time.
Going to bed when you can barely move your feet to get to bed or when you are so exhausted you are having hard time holding a toothbrush is too late! Yes, I have done it too many times. "On Time" might be different for everyone and on some nights it's earlier than on others. For me going to bed at 11:30 is too late. I've tried 11:00 P.M. and it felt like it was too late also. So, I set a goal to go to bed at 10:30 P.M. the latest.
2. Exercise.
I think it's absolutely crucial to give your body that adrenaline through exercising. I don't think intense and excessive exercise will do any good: you will be extremely sore the next day, which will kill your desire to go to the gym and day after day it will be very hard to make it there again.
I was in my sport clothes all day today. I exercised in the morning and ended up playing badminton with our neighbors in the evening, so it counted as a second workout. Oh, and my four-year-old threw a dance party in his room, so we got some sweating going then too :)
If you want to have any energy during the day - exercise!
3. Eat properly.
I emptied all our dish cupboards from dishes that are large in size. Now we have medium size plates and smaller bawls only left. It's amazing! I love doing the dishes now - they are all in the same size and shape and are easier to arrange in our dishwasher. Our portions are smaller as well.
We also changed our diet. I made sure my family and I drink at least one healthy smoothie a day, wish green leaves, avocados, pineapple, bananas, etc. etc. We also cut down on meat significantly.
4. Feed your spirituality with positive messages.
Every day I watch a video or listen to a talk that makes me feel good, that makes me want to be a better person, that reaches to my inner "me" and pulls the best out of it. Every one of us is imperfect and striving to achieve that perfection. By listening and watching positive messages I am encouraged to do better.
5. Give yourself a credit!
I think a big part of being depressed is being so unsatisfied with yourself. But, wait! Look around! Have you done any good today? Look through a microscope and see if, what you might think insignificant, to-dos that you did today actually brightened someone's day? Gave another reassurance of the good? Melted someone's heart with kindness? I am sure your input into this world had something positive in it.
6. Appreciate what you have.
We so often forget that already have so much! Depression makes us forget that, it wants us to have more and more and more and THEN, maybe, we can be happy. Well, I am sorry to tell you, but it's a big fat juicy lie. You can be happy right now, right there, with what you already have! Try it! Just one day, or one hour, try to be satisfied with what you already have. Then do another day, or another hour. Little by little you will train yourself to be appreciative of your circumstances and your possessions. This does not at all mean that you shouldn't try to change your circumstances and improve your quality of life, it just means that you need to learn how to be happy with what you have. Otherwise, once you improve your circumstances you won't reach that happiness you were hoping it would bring you - because you don't know how to be happy with what you have.
That's all. Only six steps to happy you! :)
